Aeneid

So besides the fact that my World Civilization teacher probably has Alzheimers and always changes the syllabus and never does what he says he is going to do, the reading material is super interesting. Right now we are reading the Aeneid by Virgil, it's an epic poem comparable to the Odyssey.... but it is a million times better. It is beautifully written I kind of love it.

I just read book 4, where Dido is cursed by cupid to fall in love with Aeneas. She hasn't loved anyone since her brother murdered her husband years ago. She confides in her sister and is all hey I have feelings for Aeneas and I feel guilty about it... Her sister was all heck check him out he's half god you're a free woman go for it... They fall into an all consuming love and she neglects her kingdom and everyone starts to hate her. She makes love to Aeneas and her reputation is tottaly trashed, and they are in their own little world for a long time. However Aeneas has this fate and he has leave to conquer Italy, it's the plan, it's the will of the God's.

So here is Aeneas supposedly this stoic is waiting for a good time to tell Dido that he's heading off with his men on his ships, to leave Dido all alone with her mess of a kingdom and horrible reputation. Dido finds out before Aeneas tells her, and she goes into a small rage at him and was all "you're going to leave without even telling me what did all this stuff mean to you all this time!?" And he just takes it and is all Dido, I was never your husband, I gotta do this, but on the inside he is just torn up, and while he is leaving on his ship he just cries silent tears and as his ships sail away Dido gets a sword and kills herself.

So yep it is super interesting and the characters actually have depth...

If you ever have time you should probably read it, add some variety to your library eh?
